Description

The Atlantic giant Squid.  Among one of the largest invertebrates, the Giant Squid is believed to attain average sizes of 13 meters (43 ft) for females, and 10 meters (33 ft) for males. Maximum length may well be up to 20 meters (66 ft), but there are no individuals documented like this.  It is very rarely seen alive, and much of its biology is currently unknown.  They are solitary hunters, eating fish and other squid.  Prey is captured with the two long tentacles and is dragged toward the sharp, parrot-like beak in the center of the head where it is sliced up and then scraped by the radula.  Adult giant squid probably have few predators, aside from Sperm Whales and occasionally Pilot whales.  Juveniles are more vulnerable to predation.  Giant Squid are found in deep, abyssal waters worldwide, and there is controversy as to weather there are more than 1 species of giant squid (As many as eight may exist, but other studies may show that only one species exists).

Aren't those long tentacles retracted in a healthy individual?
