Axis axis

The Axis Deer. Also known as the Chital. A beautiful deer native to India, Sri Lanka and surrounding countries, the Axis deer has been introduced as a game animal in Australia, Argentina, Uraguay, and various states of the U.S. including Texas, California, Hawaii, And Florida. It prefers to live in woodland, but also enjoys open grassland. They are prey for a variety of animals including Tigers, Crocodiles, Pythons, and Dholes. They seem to have a symbiotic relationship with the Grey Langur (Presbytis entellus), eating the fruit that the monkeys drop from the tree and using the monkeys as a predator alarm. Full grown stags have 3 point antlers. They live in mixed sex herds ranging in 10 - 50 individuals. Usually only younger males spar, while older males paw the ground and put on a threat display to each other.
