Description
A spinosaurid from Brazil, Irritator was fairly small for a member of it's family, about 8 meters (26ft) in length. It, like all spinosaurs, was a carnivore; probably feeding primarily on fish and other aquatic animals. The animal itself was probably semi-aquatic. However, evidence shows that spinosaurids, or at the very least this genus, fed on other kinds of prey as well. A spinosaur (most likely Irritator) tooth found in Brazil was found embedded in the neck vertebrae of a pterosaur. The odd genus name comes from the fact that the paleontologists found out that the skull, discovered by commercial fossil collectors who were trying to sell it illegally, was artificially modified to look complete and therefor, more valuable. This annoyed (in this case, irritated) the paleontologists so much that one of them; Dr. David Martill, named it Irritator. The species name derives from the fictional character Professor Challenger from Arthur Conan Doyle's novel The Lost World.
